WEEK IN REVIEW - August 16th - 20th, 2010
Monday:
Propane prices moved higher by 1 percent in Belvieu and 0.5 percent
in Conway even as crude fell 1 percent on reports of builds in
China's crude inventory.
Tuesday: Propane was caught in the downdraft of sharply
falling crude to post a 1 percent loss at both hubs. Crude fell 2
percent as U.S. housing data showed a 27.2 percent drop in July
existing home sales.
Wednesday: Crude posted a technical rally despite a bearish
EIA report that showed higher-than-expected builds in crude, but
lagged with only a
0.5 percent gain. A higher-than-expected build in propane inventory
for the 34th week of the year might have been a factor in propane's
relative weakness.
Thursday: With a gain of 1.2 percent, crude posted its first
two-day gain since Aug. 3. Propane outpaced the gain in crude,
making up for the lag on Wednesday, with around 1.6 percent gains in
value. A fall in initial jobless claims helped crude sustain its
rally.
Friday: Crude was extremely volatile with a sharp fall early
on a downward revision in U.S. second quarter gross domestic
product. Markets rebounded following a speech from Federal Reserve
Chairman Bernanke in which he pledged the support from the Fed in
reducing the risk of a double-dip recession.
